The Ending That Mattered Most

Five weeks after Palmito Ranch, Union soldiers arrived at Galveston with an announcement: every enslaved person in Texas was free. That day — June 19, 1865 — became Juneteenth. The battles decided who held the coast, but freedom for enslaved Texans was the ending that mattered most.
